At Grover Cleveland High School, our English as a New Language (ENL) program empowers multilingual learners to thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and culturally. We offer engaging, student-centered instruction designed to build English proficiency while honoring each student’s experiences and heritage. Our program includes Standalone ENL classes as well as integrated ELA, math, science, and social studies courses, which ensures students receive targeted language development alongside full access to rigorous academic content. We also offer Transitional Bilingual Education courses in Spanish. Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) provides Spanish-speaking students with core instruction (literacy, math, science, social studies), using their home language as a bridge to maintain academic progress while they build English proficiency over time. In addition, with courses such as ENL/Art and ENL/Theatre, our English Language Learners have the opportunity to explore the arts while gaining valuable experience with the English language. Our courses feature project-based learning, small group supports, and inclusive practices, which are woven into every classroom. Our ENL program helps students gain confidence, master academic content, and prepare for college, careers, and life in a diverse, global society.
Our World Language Department opens doors to the global society by offering engaging, high-quality courses in Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin. Students at Grover Cleveland High School develop real-world communication skills through interactive lessons, authentic cultural experiences, and project-based learning that bring language to life. Experiences within our courses help to inspire global citizenship, cultural understanding, and academic excellence, while preparing students to connect meaningfully across cultures and succeed in an increasingly interconnected world. Our World Language classes also support students in preparing for the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) program. The New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) is a prestigious honor awarded to high school graduates who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in both English and at least one other world language. The NYSSB Program is designed to encourage language study and recognize various linguistic achievements. The Seal appears on a student’s diploma and transcript, helping them stand out to colleges and employers while affirming their cultural and communicative strengths.
